Common problems
Dripping tap or a tap that will not turn
A worn washer or ceramic cartridge causes the drip; scale on the spindle makes it stiff. Usually a cartridge or a whole tap replacement – a quick job.
Blocked basin, sink or toilet
Hair, grease and food in basins and sinks; tissue, sanitary products or plastic in toilets. The plumber clears it with a spring/snake or pressure; if it keeps recurring the main drain line is the problem.
Water pump not running or not lifting water
A failed capacitor, jammed impeller, a leaking foot valve that lost the prime, or a burnt motor winding. On submersible pumps, cable and float-switch faults are common too.
Pipe leak or damp wall
A leak in concealed pipework shows as stains on the wall or water on the ceiling below. The plumber locates the leak, cuts out that section and joins new pipe – masonry work may follow.
Tank overflowing or no water
A failed float/ball valve makes the rooftop tank overflow. Sediment at the bottom blocks the outlet so lower floors get a trickle – the tank needs cleaning.
Geyser, shower and flush fitting
Connecting a new basin, toilet, shower or geyser, replacing the valves inside a cistern, or creating inlet/outlet points for a washing machine.

- Water pressure and the supply valves – where it can be shut off
- Drain line slope, traps and vents – why blockages keep recurring
- Pump capacitor, current draw, foot valve and priming; on submersibles the cable and float switch
- Tank float valve, overflow and sediment
- Cistern inlet/outlet valves and flapper
- Pipe material (GI, PVC, PPR, uPVC) – the right fittings and solvent or thread

Wait a few days to see the leak does not return, then rate and review. The price you record helps others gauge typical costs.
Safety tips before you try anything yourself
- For a big leak, close the main valve first – find out in advance where your flat's inlet valve is.
- Switch off the breaker before touching a water pump; no electrical work barefoot on a wet floor.
- Do not pour acid or harsh chemicals down a blocked toilet – it damages pipes and endangers the plumber.
- If someone climbs inside a tank to clean it, keep a second person outside; gas can build up in a closed tank.
- A geyser needs both its water line and its electrical line in good order; if in doubt call an electrician too.
What affects the price
Visit fee
The fee for coming to look is on the profile. For small jobs (tap replacement, clearing a blockage) many quote visit fee plus labour as one figure.
Who buys the parts
Taps, valves, pipe and fittings vary a lot by brand. Buy them yourself and you pay labour only; if the plumber buys, ask for the receipt. A pump capacitor is cheap; motor rewinding or a new pump is not.
Type of job and time
A cartridge swap takes half an hour; finding a concealed leak, breaking the wall and rejoining takes half a day – labour follows. Masonry repair is separate.
Floors and access
A rooftop tank, carrying a heavy pump to the 6th floor without a lift, or lifting a submersible pump out of a well – extra hands cost extra. Mention it in advance.
